Canada GAP Residential Waste Flow Charts

The purpose of GAP is to ensure that municipalities report and compare their data on an apples-to-apples basis. The charts and tables which have been generated from the Ontario 2002 GAP data allow an “apples to apples” comparison of the diversion performance of different municipalities.

The Ontario government adopted GAP as a performance measure in mandatory municipal reporting to Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing. Statistics Canada has incorporated GAP as part of their bi-annual survey of municipal waste management activities across Canada.

In 2002, the Ontario Municipal Datacall process was modified to include all of the information needed to estimate a GAP residential waste diversion value for each municipality. Each chart shows comparative data for generation, diversion and disposal per capita; residential waste diversion achieved (%), and the contribution of on-property management (backyard composting and grasscycling), organics and recycling to the total diversion achieved for 25 municipalities in Ontario.

United Kingdom GAP Residential Waste Flow Charts

CSR was involved in a pilot project carried out in Hampshire and Essex, United Kingdom to initiate a GAP approach for the UK. Several GAPs, listed below, were developed for UK communities.

The approach varies somewhat from the Canadian GAP because of the different systems and reporting requirements used in the UK. The calculation of GAP diversion was agreed by a committee of municipal representatives from the two counties.
