REDUCE
Think about what you are buying and ask yourself, "Can I do without this?"
Try buying some products in bulk or buy products with little or no packaging whenever possible.

REUSE
Things that are not brand new do not have to be less valuable. Think of a nickel. Over its lifetime, probably hundreds of people have owned it and used it, but its value remains constant. Many packaging materials can be reused for their original purpose or for something entirely different. Can you think of things that you can do to reuse containers like boxes, bags, peanut butter jars or margarine tubs?

RECYCLE
Remember to recycle everything that your municipality collects in your recycling program. Recycling is usually easy at home and at school but what about when you are walking down the street?  Think about what you can do then.

REMEMBER
Buy products that are made with recycled materials whenever possible. That helps to keep the markets for recycled materials healthy.

RE-THINK
Not everything can be reduced, reused or recycled.  Some reused items eventually wear out and can’t be easily repaired.  When you have done all you can, re-think your options.  Be creative. For example, compost your food waste – you can visit www.compostcouncil.com for more information.

At the end of the day, there will always be some things which have to go to landfill or could be used to provide alternative fuel.  In the City of Gothenburg in Sweden, for example, all of the schools are heated by steam produced from using waste as a fuel substitute for coal, oil or gas.
